Nam Theun 2 Hydro Project to go Ahead in Laos – With SDV International Logistics ! (04/05)
On the event of the World Bank’s president, Mr James Wolfensohn giving a positive signal to the Nam Theun 2 hydro project in Laos during his last visit there in February this year, when he went to inspect the Nam Theun 2 project area of the Nakhai plateau, the project has a very big chance to be approved, and within a couple of months the World Bank would give their response to the project after having received the report of Mr Wolfensohn. It is confirmed that it is the last stage for the NT2 project before the final word is given on a World Bank political risk guarantee.
The NT2 hydroelectric project has been identified by the World Bank as a key project for the economic and social development of the Lao P.D.R.
The project’s total cost is USD 1 billion, 28 % from shareholders and 72 % international debt financing. The Asian development bank and export credit agencies will provide risk and guarantees or other financial instruments. Board approval is expected between March and April with a deadline of May 8 as the start for the full construction activities.
SDV International Logistics in Laos was the first International freight forwarder to open it’s office at Thakhek and after having temporary closed for 2 years, SDV Laos has re-opened it’s office in Thakhek, which is an important place for transit cargoes to go up to the site. Thakhek is one of the international sites for clearance of cargoes between Laos and Nakorn Pranom on the Thai side, separated by the Mekong river.
SDV International Logistics in Laos has already handled a few shipments for the account of a Japanese sub-contractor and of course is expecting to continue to be one of the only freight forwarding companies to handle this project which will end in 2009.
The survey on this project started in 1987 costing US 4 million supported by the World Bank and UNDP. In October 2002, NTPC signed an agreement with the Lao Government to operate the project for 25 years after beginning the operations by the end of 2009.
